Huger Street Streetscape
Project Information
Location and Extent
The project area includes the Huger Street right-of-way between Morrison Drive and Meeting Street. Huger Street is just south of the Arthur Ravenel Bridge in the Upper Peninsula District of the downtown Charleston. Some area west of Meeting Street has also been designed, but that portion is not funded as part of this project.
Planned Street Cross Section
The street will include automobile travel lanes, bicycle lanes, plantings, lighting and sidewalks. The typical widths of these elements are shown in the drawing below.
Existing and Proposed
The rendering shows the existing street condition and the proposed improvements. The view is looking west from Morrison Drive towards Meeting Street. The proposed improvements include:
Drainage – New system in areas with little or no existing infrastructure, modifications in remainder of project area.
Sidewalks / curbs - New on both sides of Huger Street (Meeting St. to Morrison Dr.).
Bike lanes – New on both sides of Huger Street (Meeting St. to Morrison Dr.), with shared-lane arrows (“sharrows”) at intersections.
Travel / turn lanes – Reduced to the minimum width allowed for the majority of the project, with improved alignment at intersections.
Landscape / street lighting – To the extent possible, the remaining space will be used for trees and street lighting. (Due to the site distance requirements of key intersections, we may have limited planting opportunities.)
