Brigade Street
Brigade Street is emerging as a key east-west corridor. It will serve as a important connection between the planned Lowline and existing/new residences on the peninsula’s east side. The improvements identified by the City and the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) are intended to improve the safety and comfort for all road users, and enhance connectivity for people walking and bicycling to the future Lowcountry Lowline. The project will extend along Brigade Street from the Lowcountry Lowline to Huguenin Ave.
Proposed Improvements
Safety and connectivity improvements for people walking, biking, taking transit, and driving include:
New Crosswalk markings that are more visible to drivers.
Bike lanes with green pavement markings at driveways and intersections.
Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons (RRFBs) to remind drivers traveling on Meeting Street of their legal obligation to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.
Curb extensions to improve visibility of pedestrians, shorten the crossing distance, and encourage slower turning speeds.
